Automatic Cat Waterer

Cat parents are always trying to make life better for their kitties. One area that is often overlooked because it usually doesn’t occur to people, is water. Cats originated from the desert, and as such, are predisposed to doing without. In the wild, most of their moisture would come from their prey. In today’s society of canned food and dry kibble, water is a separate entity. Many, if not most, domestic cats are under-hydrated. This can cause serious health issues if left untreated.

The most common is kidney stones and bladder blockages. These usually have acute reactions and you know something is wrong with your cat. The other common problem is megacolon. As the name implies, the colon becomes greatly enlarged because feces travels more slowly through the intestine due to lack of water, and becomes greater in size before being eliminated.

This material is very dry and can cause damage to the intestines by scraping it, or adhering to the surface, then pulling some of the tissue free as it travels. Due to lack of moisture, it is difficult to eliminate, becoming quite painful, and running the risk of blocking the intestine entirely.

The easiest way to prevent or control such problems is getting the cat to drink more.

Cats have very sensitive palates when it comes to water. To prevent themselves from being poisoned by naturally occurring alkalies in desert water, it has been proven that cats can discern a difference of less than 1 part per million of a chemical dissolved in water.

What to us would have no discernable taste could send a cat up the wall. Stale, stagnant water holds no appeal for a cat. Water that moves- now that’s another matter. First, motion; we all know cats are drawn to motion, it piques a feline’s interest. Second, taste; water that is in motion aerates, removing the stagnant taste.

And as a bonus for humans, because there is a reservoir to keep all this in motion, you do not have to fill it every day. But- you must keep it clean. Bacteria and other debris gets in the water, altering the taste, which many cats find unpleasant. Cleaning the waterer on a regular schedule means your cats are more likely to remain hydrated and problem free.

An automatic cat waterer generally comes in three materials- metal, ceramic and plastic. It has been proven that some cats (like humans) are allergic to plastic. Make sure if you get a plastic waterer to check for allergic reactions, (swollen, irritated mouth or chin, possible chin acne, excessive scratching at the face.)

Ceramic automatic cat waterers have the least allergic reactions but tend to be more expensive. Metal cat waterers are usually a combination of metal and plastic.

There are 3 basic styles of cat waterer; bowl, the usual, but with no aeration or motion; gravity fed, usually a bowl and reservoir, if kitty is a good drinker this works well. Again, needs regular cleansing to keep bacteria and debris to a minimum. And finally, a fountain; this is most likely to gain kitty’s attention. Water is in motion and aerated. Also, having the water ‘fall’ seems to be an additional incentive to drink. (How many times have you made the faucet drip to let the cat drink out of the tub?)

Some people may say an automatic cat waterer’s a rather expensive way (when compared to a bowl) to get kitty to drink, but it is a LOT cheaper (and less stressful) than a trip to the veterinarian when something goes wrong.
