Are acne and gluten intolerance related?

I take pretty good care of my face by washing it, not touching it, and stuff. But I still have acne. I have tried stuff like putting lemon and toothpaste on it, but its stubborn. I’m pretty frustrated. But then I heard somewhere that gluten intolerance and acne are related. I have the celiac gene and gluten intolerance, but I still eat wheat. Would me stop eating wheat help my acne go away?

It might. Having the gene means that you could have celiac disease, even without obvious symptoms. Celiac disease can cause havoc on your immune system, can cause general inflammation in your body, and due to malnutrition can cause many of your body’s systems (including hormones and those that detoxify the body) to stop working properly — all of which can cause or contribute to problems with acne. Many people with gluten intolerance report that their acne cleared up on the gluten-free diet. (That said, my acne improved but did not go away completely.)

Having the gene for celiac disease does not mean that you have active disease. Have you had blood work done to test for gluten sensitivity? If you have previously had positive blood work for gluten sensitivity, then you know your body is mounting an immune response to gluten and you should not be eating it, even if you don’t have any obvious symptoms!! Studies have shown that even those without biopsy-confirmed blunting of the intestine (“biopsy-proven celiac disease”) but who test positive for elevated antibodies to gluten, have a higher risk of secondary conditions (like cancer) and death than the general public. If you have not been tested, then you should get tested. And you should be tested BEFORE starting the diet, as once you are on the diet, the tests will come back negative regardless of whether you are gluten intolerant or not.
