Although acne is traditionally considered a disorder of adolescence, long after those years have passed and the state of acne is gone, many adults are left with facial scarring from acne they had years earlier. Thank you to the progress of modern medicine, there are very effective treatments available today to treat acne scars.

Acne is a disease that often leaves scars behind. There are several kinds of acne scars. Pitting scars are generally known as "peak ice scars. The crater more like scars are known as "depressed scars. In addition, changes in skin color can also occur site of previous acne lesions. The skin can end up darker than normal, lighter than normal, or redder than normal.

For a single ice pick scar, the most effective treatment is simple excision. However, when the scarring is more widespread, other methods must be used to treat scars. Dermabrasion was one of the earliest methods developed for the treatment of acne scars, and is still used today. With dermabrasion, a rotating wire brush or spinning diamond burr is used to smooth the surface of the skin. As the skin heals, a new layer of skin replaces the abraded skin, resulting in an improved appearance in the treated area. However, dermabrasion may require 10-20 days to heal and may cause redness that can persist for several months. For these reasons, other methods have been developed which have faster recoveries and fewer side effects.

We are now using the Fraxel laser for acne scars. We believe that Fraxel laser is the best means available today for treating acne scars more widespread. With the Fraxel laser, facial skin has resurfaced in a series of 4 or 5 treatments. Because the Fraxel laser preserves normal healthy skin between the areas of skin that was treated with laser healing and recovery occur more quickly after each laser treatment.

We were extremely impressed by the improvement of acne scarring after Fraxel laser treatment. The Fraxel laser is a home-run "when it comes to treating acne scars.

Our patients who have acne scars are invited to call our office and make an appointment to have their scars assessed. More excision of the scar, dermabrasion, and Fraxel laser resurfacing, other treatments for acne scars are also available. I’ve heard some bad things about peelings, so if you do it, make sure it is wayyyy before the wedding so that you give your skin some time to recover from any redding or side effects it may leave. Most blemishes can be covered up with make-up that day.

I use St Ives apricot face scrub, which exfoliates, every 2 days (daily may be too harsh) and love how it evens out my tone. Mary Kay also sells a micro-dermabrasion kit that I hear ppl rave so much about.

Bc it is such a huge event, I would see a specialist (dermatologist) who can make the safest and best recommendations for your skin type. Congrats on your wedding, and I’m sure you’ll look beautiful!
